Alex – live demo from weekend training workshop – October 2018
The following was from a recent weekend training. Alex was another volunteer for my live therapy demo on the training weekend on 13th October 2018.
Alex had seen a hypnotherapist for 6 sessions and was disillusioned with hypnotherapy, and he also had a course of CBT, neither of which worked.
I deliberately chose a person who had not had previous success with other therapies.
Note that with my approach we are not actually aiming for hypnosis but for a systems change. If a person ends up feeling relaxed enough to also be hypnotised, that’s fine, but not actually necessary.

Phobia of being a passenger – 15 min therapy – Nov 2016 ‘soft launch’ London
This clip was taken from my ‘soft launch’ one year ago with the consent of attendee Malcolm. Malcolm had a few adverse experiences with being in the passenger seat (including a minor car crash!) leading to a phobic avoidant response if was not in the driving seat himself.
This demo illustrates the versatility of the model because it can also be employed in a brief conversational format as well as in a formal hypnosis format.
In this example I lent more on the solution-focused aspect of my version of parts therapy while using ‘right brained’ language and motivation.
The feedback a few weeks after the session was that Malcolm remained happy to be driven by others

OCD – 20 min therapy – inability to touch the same ‘contaminated’ glass – Nov 2016 ‘soft launch’ London
The attendee I’ll call ‘D’ described how her fear of any bodily fluids (saliva, sweat, germs etc) ruined any family celebrations for her. She was unable to share any buffets or food or drink even with her family. What’s not been taped on this video clip is that while chatting with D in the aftermath of the session, I pointedly poured myself some water in a glass and drank out of it. This was the same glass offered to D afterwards.

SED – Live demo 50 min therapy – in Melbourne Nov 2017
Ebony explains how nervous she was before the session and also mentioned at the start of the session that she would not be able to eat the tester food even for $100,000. She also explains the impact of SED on her daily life. Even when she doesn’t like one food, she proceeds to try another.

Live Demo of SED Treatment for a TV Company
I was approached by a TV company to see whether I would be interested in working on a potential new program on anxiety. As I informed them I often do a one session treatment for a lot of anxiety they were a little incredulous as they had been speaking to other therapists who took longer. I offered to do a demo and bring in a live candidate. It is very easy to get volunteers for SED as I just post a notice on a forum and then get lots of replies so I chose Sarah.
In this demo treatment:
* Owing to time constraints I did a stripped down version of my usual protocol. The therapy was finished in about 30mins. The majority of the time was actually time for an educational bit about how anxiety and phobias work.
* Sarah was sceptical throughout the whole process and on occasion even told me she was resisting some of my instructions.
* Sarah did not know what event triggered this but it was early childhood.
* We did not use hypnosis either.
After the session Sarah is tasting a fruit salad and a salad while answering questions from the producers.
In both cases, the set up took approx 40 minutes and then the change work itself took approx 15 minutes:
The first case was with Leo. Leo has unfortunately had early experiences of many different things each of which alone could lead to SED/ARFID: he had tongue-tie (which means his brain associated pain with feeding): he is hyper-mobile (which means hyper sensitivity to sensory feedback, especially texture, temperature) and some experience of vomiting with feeding. Despite all these influences, Leo was bravely committed to getting better.
He lived off fruits, yoghurts, pretzels and the like.
At the end of the session Leo is experimenting with the foods brought in, despite them being very challenging foods to start with (especially cold chicken with avocado!) when there are elements of sensory processing issues. However, even though Leo still had difficulty getting used to the new tastes, he did also learn that he could cope even when he did not like the tastes. Fortunately he liked the healthy greens he tasted. For the full before-and-after video clip of Leo, please click on:

Sam also had issues with feeding from birth , however there were no obvious reasons that his parents could remember. Sam tries a range of fruit and yoghurt for the first time and a few salad vegetables.
As can clearly be seen in both cases, neither child was hypnotised – we were chatting and having a normal conversation and they were fidgeting accordingly as would be expected, and still got the desired results.
Please note this approach will not work for all children but does also need to take into account – motivation, timing, receptivity, and commitment.
